Senior Adults Find Many Reasons To Unretire | What Is Yours?

I want to share some highlights from an article I read this week on the Climate Redwood City site. “No desire to retire: for many, the gold watch says it’s time to start over” tells the stories of how retirees reimagined the purpose of their lives.
Many retirees fight weariness and dissatisfaction, they’re become bored and restless. They reject pure leisure and reenter the workforce. Yet they long to work on their own terms and do things they enjoy.
An 83 year old English professor is retiring for the second time, this one is for medical reasons. Bill got great pleasure in seeing the faces of his students who had “moments of greater understanding.”
But he admits he enjoyed his second career teaching older adults even more. He says “they want to learn something about difficult and exciting topics” for the purest of reasons. This allowed him to fill a need.
Kathy returned to work after taking time off to spend with her family until a headhunter came calling. Her new position provided a deep satisfaction in helping other people and was immensely interesting.
Mary chose volunteer work because she can “control my time, I’m treated very well, and I’m appreciated.” Burns felt it was her obligation to give back and admitting she was privileged and fortunate. Patty gets tremendous personal satisfaction for packing meals each week for needy recipients.
Two physicians make a real impact in their communities. Hentz assists with surgeries and provides on-the-job training. Passing on his knowledge to others is rewarding. Jerry volunteers at a free clinic and supervises nurse practitioners in training. Making a difference in the lives of others bring him fulfillment.
Bruce feels he has a lot more to do after 30 years in law enforcement. Helping society and our democracy are important to him. Her calls it his “calling”.
Alan retired early and wanted to spend time with his family and also wanted to become more active in his community.
Other stories complete the article.
